How It Works
Finasteride works by blocking the action of an enzyme in the body called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme is responsible for converting the hormone testosterone into a more potent form called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By inhibiting this enzyme, finasteride significantly lowers DHT levels in the blood.
For BPH, this reduction in DHT helps to shrink an enlarged prostate gland, improving urinary symptoms.
For hair loss, lowering DHT levels in the scalp helps to slow hair loss and can even promote new hair growth in some men.
