What Is Finasteride 1mg?

Jul 03, 2026

Finasteride 1mg is a prescription medication primarily used to treat male androgenetic alopecia (also known as male‑pattern hair loss). It is a 5‑alpha‑reductase inhibitor that works by slowing hair loss and promoting hair regrowth.

Primary Use and Mechanism of Action

●Indication: It is used in men with mild to moderate hair loss to increase scalp hair count and prevent further hair loss. It is not indicated for use in women or children.

●Mechanism: Hair loss in this condition is linked to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Finasteride inhibits the type II 5‑alpha‑reductase enzyme, which converts testosterone into DHT. By lowering DHT levels in the scalp, it reverses the balding process.

    Dosage and Onset of Effect

●Standard dose: 1 mg (one tablet) once daily, with or without food.

●Onset and maintenance: It typically takes at least 3 months of continuous use to observe any visible improvement in hair growth or reduction in hair loss. For best results, long‑term use is recommended. Note that the therapeutic effect is usually lost within 12 months of stopping the medication.
