What Is Oxymetholone?

Oct 09, 2025

Anadrol, known by its chemical name oxymetholone, is a potent, synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS). It is classified as a C17-alpha-alkylated (C17-aa) oral steroid, a modification that allows it to survive passage through the liver and enter the bloodstream. This same characteristic is also the primary reason for its significant liver toxicity.

It was first developed in the 1960s by the pharmaceutical company Syntex and was approved for medical use.

Primary Medical Uses (Historical and Current)

Anadrol was originally developed to treat specific medical conditions characterized by muscle wasting and severe weight loss. Its legitimate medical applications are now very limited but include:

1.Treatment of Anemia: Its primary medical use was for treating certain types of anemia, particularly aplastic anemia. It works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells, reducing the need for blood transfusions. For this purpose, it has largely been replaced by safer drugs like synthetic erythropoietin (EPO).

2.Other Wasting Conditions: It was sometimes used to promote weight gain and muscle growth in patients with severe wasting syndromes, such as those caused by chronic infections, extensive surgery, or certain types of cancer.

Important Note: Due to its powerful side effect profile, its use in modern medicine is extremely rare and is considered a last-resort option in very specific clinical situations.

    Mechanism of Action

Anadrol works by binding to androgen receptors in various tissues throughout the body. Its effects are two-fold:

●Anabolic (Tissue Building): It promotes nitrogen retention and protein synthesis, which are the fundamental processes for building muscle mass.

●Androgenic (Masculinizing): It exerts masculinizing effects, though it is considered to have a higher anabolic-to-androgenic ratio than testosterone.

A key characteristic of Anadrol is that it is not a substrate for the aromatase enzyme, meaning it does not convert to estrogen. However, it is a strong progestogen, meaning it can activate the progesterone receptor. This activity is largely responsible for many of its estrogen-like side effects, such as gynecomastia (development of breast tissue in men) and water retention.

Effects and Use in Bodybuilding and Athletics

Due to its powerful anabolic effects, Anadrol is predominantly used (illegally) in the bodybuilding and athletic communities. Its reputation is built on the following:

●Rapid and Dramatic Gains in Size and Strength: Anadrol is famous for producing very quick and significant increases in muscle mass and raw strength, often within the first 1-2 weeks of use. This makes it a popular "kick-start" to a bulking cycle.

●Increased Red Blood Cell Count: This improves oxygenation and endurance, allowing for more intense and longer training sessions.

●Mass and Water Retention: A large portion of the initial weight gain is due to substantial water retention, leading to a "puffy" or "smooth" look.
